Volvo tow hitch receiver: EU std? adapter???

My 89 Volvo 760 wagon has this rectangular tow hitch receiver below the rear bumper; about 2"x4". Maybe 5cm x 10cm? Is this a European standard size? Is there any kind of adapter to US sizes in existence? Any advice on getting someone with a torch to make one? I don't expect to tow much weight - just a small utility trailer.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Having had towbars on all of my Volvos and on several other makes of car I haven't had anything like that. To what is it attached under the car?

This is a typical towbar attachment to European Union spec:

This is attached to several points on the chassis as specified by the car manufacturer. Nothing else is legal anywhere in the EU.
