About one year ago, with daughter #1 at the helm, our 94 850 cut out, showing the full Christmas tree. She was able to immediately restart, and all was fine. I quickly purchased a new fuel pump relay and slapped it in.
Yesterday, now with daughter #2 driving, the same thing (I think) happened. It seems unlikely that the one-year-old fuel pump relay is bad, right? Anything else to consider? Key switch?

Was the fuel filter also changed when you replaced the fuel pump relay?

well....
any codes ?
one thing i would check is fuel pressure at the end of fuel rail presure should be over 40 psi..
+ 1 if fuel filter has not been changed in a long while
in my case a loose ignition switch caused irregular problems but never has the car cut out but its a possibility if its really gone if you can wiggle the key a long way its time for a new one its a cheap and relatively easy part to change...
in my case...and i think i had my fair share of cut outs the causes were loose battery terminal clamps (even if it seems odd contacts have to be clean and the connectors tight..my car stalled in the middle of nowhere and restarted after being towed the terminal connectors were a bit loosse) bad fuel pump ( unconstant fuel pressure) fuel pump relay, camshaft sensor and bad maf ...
hope it helps

Thanks for the replies. No, I did not change the fuel filter. It could be 15 years old! I'll check the batt terminals for tightness. About a month ago I did replace the OE stereo headunit with a contemporary aftermarket box. Maybe I didn't fully secure the negative.
