1997 850 SE Auto trouble

Post by buster850 » Mon Oct 05, 2009 3:06 am

Gday, thanks for helping.I have a 1997 850 SE,had it for one year no probs. It was a one owner and according to the reciepts I have the previous owner spent truckloads on maintenance, however its just started doing its own thing in the tranie dept.Placed in drive it wont upshift at all beyond !st.Turn off engine restart upshifts ok,drive in top for 10 mins, stop then drive on,but it begins in top, then the orange arrow light flashes on dash, tranie returns to normal operation, light will flash for the rest of the day tranie ok.Then I will get a week or two of normal operation, then it will do the same thing at random.I just drove it yesterday and it faulted, but today drove it 350 km.over australias highest mountain range roads for 6 hours absolutely no problems.Anyone else had this happen or can correctly diagnose this problem I would be very grateful. The tranie fluid is full, clean and doesnt smell overheated. Many thanks Buster.

Hello,

if the fluid color and level is ok the PNP switch should be checked, adjusted or replaced.

the problem you describe sounds very familiar to the PNP switch malfunction. to be sure get the car to a shop and have the dtc code or codes scanned.. if you give us the code we can be sure that its the PNP switch.

the PNP stands for Park Neutral Position Switch. it lets you to start the car in P and N and restricts to start the car other than these position.its main duty is to tell the TCM transmission control module which gear is selected so this information is also sent to the ECM engine control module.

if there is a malfunction in the switch, you may not be able to start the car in P or in N position, the car may start in D position it may be in 3 position or in L position or in N position actually but the gear selector lever may show D or other position when the car is actually in another position actually. the flashing arrow you see in the instrument cluster means there is a malfunction the transmission electronic system the PNP switch is also part of this system. if things gets worse it may even lead to transmission damage.. search the forum for pnp switch or pnp fix you will find more information.. the problems you have with the car is also pointing to the PNP malfunction..

good luck

There is a way to check the PNP. When the car is acting up. Turn the car off and run the shifter through all the gears very fast about 20 or 30 times. If the issue goes away, then it is the PNP.

What this test does is clean the PNP contacts.
