How to install new timing belt, idler, tensioner and pump

Post by serge1060 »

Hello,
Can anybody help me how to install new timing belt, idler, tensioner and water pump on my Volvo S40 T5 2004.5 model? I can't afford to go to a mechanic who quoted me US$800++ for parts and labor. I will be able to save if I install it myself with your help. Thanks :)

I did this on my 2000 S40, but I can't comment on the differences between the 2000 and the 2004.5 model. It's a pretty advanced repair, but you can do it if you have patience. Also think about replacing the idler pulley, tensioner pulley AND water pump while you are in there. When you get everything back together, don't forget to manually rotate the crankshaft by hand (read: long breaker bar turning the crankshaft nut) to make sure everything still lines up.

Google "alldatadiy" and think about buying a subscription for your car (about $32 now, I think). The procedure for doing this repair will be there. I changed the engine on my s40 (and later had to do the timing belt) using the procedures on this site.
