Transmission issues

I have a 2002 C70 Convertible. I have been having problems recently on shifting from reverse to drive. The car is fine going into reverse, but when put into drive it hesitates for about 2 seconds then "clunks" into gear. I just took it to a local transmission shop. They said it is the valve box? He said with parts and labor it would be $2100!!! The computer told him 10 hours to take out and replace, at $75 an hour. Does this sound normal? I have never replace a transmission in any car, so I dont know. My Dad had to on his truck but the whole thing was about $2000. I guess Volvos are more expensive. Thanks for any replies.

Did you check the ATF fluid?

Has the fluid ever been changed?

It could be something a lot simpler and cheaper and I would check the fluid level and condition first.

Maybe an ATF flush would help. Make sure you use only JWS3309 or Toyota T-IV fluid (they are the same thing) in that transmission!!
