I'm the new guy on your forum....I live in Vermont and have owned 3 Volvos;68 144,'73 164 and now have a '96 850 5peed.I just bought the 850 and may need some info on it and parts somewhere down the road.
right now I need to get hold of previous owner and find out about timing belt.any ideas of cost of belt and installation through a dealer? I'm sure it's high but it might have to be done at some point.....Glad to be here and will try to work with you on whatever comes up.KM

I can't help you with repair costs as I live on the other side of the pond. However, as you have said, it will be high, if not very high, at the dealer.
You don't need a dealer to do this. An independent can do it at a much lower cost. Search the forum and you will find plenty of advice on timing belt renewal for the 850. You could even end up doing it yourself.

hey I just got a quote from my mechanic.. because I WILL NOT TOUCH the timing belt... many reasons... 1 being i dont want to kill my car.
it is 552$ for timing belt, water pump, gas, and labour..
when you brake it down.
tbelt- 30$
water pump- 300-400
gas- ill go with 50$
labour- guess is 2 hours.
so I mean if you figure it out... it should only cost around 100$ for your timing belt. thats the belt + install... buy it from FCP so you get their warrenty when its installed by a certified mechanic.
The dealer is going to... well... rape you... in a matter of speaking of course.
because you will be at the dealership.. and they will charge you exact and maybe more then book hours. which for a timing belt shouldnt take more than an hour for the dealer to do... MAX. so factoring my experiences with the dealer...
300$ at least.

I guess that's why they suggest you do your water pump while your in there.
