S40 2005 Won't Start no instrument cluster lights

Hope I can get a quick response no volvo dealer within 100 miles.
My dau came home for the holiday yesterday she went to her car and Battery was dead. Tried to jump start no luck, tried to charge battery could get dome lights and when turn the key on would get instrument cluster lights, door locks would work by using the door switches but not by the remote. Tonight took battery to autozone it checked bad bought new one. When installing the pos terminal would get arcing indicating drawing current. After getting terminal could hear a humming noise in the battery area. Get in car turn ignition on no lights nothing except lights on gearshift. Also, now remote will lock unlock car did several times thinking maybe to reset key (read on a post someplace). Sorry for such a long post just trying to include everything.

Did you install the negative lead first?
