Dear community,
I have got my new 94 850 up on its legs again after a few fixes. It has an exhaust leak at the down pipe, where their is some metal wire heat shield sleeve. The top end of the sleeve has separated from the downpipe and I feel the exhaust leaking here. I noticed that underneath is a metal pipe, wavy. There is some play between the exhaust end and the manifold in the joint.
My questions are:
1. Is there supposed to be play or that underlying pipe supposed to be directly connect. Therefore, that is what is leaking.
2. Or, does this metal heatshield metal mesh pipe actually supposed to make the connection and it being separated is what is causing the noise and exhaust leak.
3. lastly, are there any fixes without having to replace the entire manifold?

Sadly there isn't a good way to fix that joint. My son has a broken joint in the same place on his '96 NA, it didn't have the mesh cover, just a corrugated pipe in the same area. I just bought him a new header from OBX Racing that does have the mesh cover but it still has the corrugated pipe inside of it. I think it is designed to flex a bit but when the motor mounts go bad it allows for more flex than it is is designed to handle. I just got the new header delivered on Friday and he won't be home from school until late next week so I can't yet give you any pointers on replacing it. I think it should be fairly straightforward with a lot of PB Blaster on the studs.

I am away at school too and I need to drive home. I would love to wait if I can put a temporary bandage on it. Do you think that tape stuff from the auto stores would work for ~1000 miles?

I sent some of the muffler bandage to my son and it quieted things down a little bit but it didn't seal the leak. You aren't going to hurt anything but your ears by driving it that way, there will be no permanent damage done to the car.
Good luck with it.

do you think that getting a used manifold would be worth the time and effort to pull? Or would it likely be a bad idea. How much was your header? They are $400 from the parts stores.
also, my car seems to cut out every now and then. A mechanic said the exhaust leak could be causing this. You guys agree? The 02 sensor could be getting funky readings or pack pressure issues perhaps. I'm not sure this makes sense so second opinions?

Propably should start a new thread for this, however, with no codes I would start by looking at the MAF.

I paid $200.00 from OBX Racing for the new header. It just came in and I have not yet installed it so I am somewhat reticent to recommend it at this point. It sure looks well made though. OBX Racing doesn't list Volvo stuff on their website but they do sell it through eBay. In an email they indicated that they can do a bit better on price if you email them directly.
I threw up a picture of it in this thread.
