98 V70 XC - Trunk open light on

Post by mindshadow » Sun Dec 20, 2009 1:35 pm

For some reason my "trunk/hatch open" light won't turn off. :\ I've definitely made sure it's shut but there must be a short somewhere or something broken. Anybody got any ideas?

Check the wiring harness where it comes off of the tailgate back to the body. Those wires get a lot of flexing and the wires ultimately break inside of the insulation. Tug on the wires and a wire that is broken internally will reveal itself.

Possibility #2 - The switch in the tailgate latch is sticky or has gone bad.
A shot of WD-40, TriFlo or similar spray lube may get it back into action.

Okay, new development. Lately my hatch has stopped latching. It's kinda an on and off problem. I disassembled the back trunk area and didn't see anything wrong, but when I put it together everything worked. I did notice when I shined a light up into the locking mechanism there is a spring that seemed to be loose, but I'm unsure how to get it back where it goes. I suspect that at least has to do with why my light is on, if not why the trunk would not latch.

Mine doesn't like to latch when it gets cold,
but it sounds like you may need a new one... :(

Yeah, the issue seems to have come up when the cold streak came through here. Of course you would think engineers in Sweden would engineer for colder temperatures than what Alabama normally gets. :\ I suspect that the spring that I see rattling around got in the way of it latching and that the spring is somehow connected to something that triggers the system to know that the trunk is closed.

Update on this. The spring is definitely what is causing the thing to not latch. I can stick something thin up there and move the spring out of the way and it will latch. A friend said there should be a screw under the trim to pull the latching mechanism out and then I should be able to reconnect the spring. If that doesn't work I may be a set of precision tweezers (the real small thin ones) and see if I can figure out where the spring attaches. I suspect that will fix not just the latching problem but the trunk open light. Anyone have any experience disassembling this thing?

Having the same problem myself, except the hatch is stuck closed, not open. Thinking the worn struts caused the spring/latch assembly to fail from repeated slamming. i have new struts and a new hatch mechanism coming but i have to deal other issues first. I'm very interested if you get to fixing this before I do. Please post whatever you find.

I'm going to have a look at VADIS and see if it has an exploded diagram of the trunk latch. Those exploded diagrams are extremely useful in these situations. If not I'm going to get a precision pair of tweezers and maybe some kind of magnifier and see if I can just re-hook the spring to whatever it attaches to (though it seems like I remember some plastic coming out of that area after the light came on).

Where did you order your replacement latch from?

yep, a hunk of plastic that looked like a covering for the latch itself.

I found a place in CT that has a hatch (i have yet to find a parts place that will sell just the lock assembly) for a reasonable price. i think the guy said he has two in stock. although erie vo-vo seems to be stocked pretty well, i just went through them to get an axle. i might give them a call actually before i drive to ct to pick a whole hatch up. just out of curiosity, were your struts worn before this problem occured?
