S70 glt, 98, Turbo oil leak

Post by VolvoS70Driver » Fri Jan 01, 2010 6:08 pm

Another issue found while doing the work under the car. I knew there was an oil leak at the turbo but figured it was the oil return tube/flange. I was prepared to change that and saw it had apparently been done and also the oil appears to be coming from something alittel higher up. Either where a little balck hose connects (at red arrow) or around the other component attached to teh turbo (in red outline) I really want to fix this while I have the axle out and can get to it relatively easy so any thoughts on where the oil might be coming from will be appreciated.

Mine actually looks exactly the same way...I had previously never looked that far up under the car, until I was trying to figure out what the bad smell I was getting was coming from. That's from oil dripping down onto it probably from the rear main seal. Look under the spark plug cover. Is it filled with oil? Does your oil dipstick smoke when pulled?

You probably need to clean the PTC nipple/overhaul the PVC system as well. Yay more work!

I actually do have a new PCV box looking thing to replace but have yet to find where it goes. I was hoping it may help some but would also like to replace any seals down here while I have it this accessible. I may check that little black hose a little closer and see hose easy it might be to replace.

Thanks for the input.

The oil separator? Under the %$^% intake manifold...I'm not sure who decided to put it there, but I want to punch them in the face. I did mine last week, and its a pain when it's never more than 30 degrees outside and you can't feel your hands

Here's what I followed to replace the system on mine: http://www.lakesidedp.com/uploadpics/pcv/index.html

Oh you just made my day. And I thought I would get this project finished today.

I had a fear that is where it would be located but was clicking my oily shoes and repeating "It's got to be in plain site, It's got to be in plain site........"

Very good set of instructions on that link though.. Thanks

With all the wet oil residue I'm seeing in the air intake hoses to turbo and intgercooler, plus the fact that it looks like oil is actually dripping out of the dipstick tube, I figure it's got to be this.

I also like the way the Chilton manual avoids mentioning this component entirely.

Sorry about that

I'm hoping it solved my oil problem for now, but there is STILL some pressure on my car, but it's much better than it was before. I'm going to try digging the PTC nipple out again and give it a good cleaning...if I can figure out how to get it out.

Funny what you find sometimes... Re: S70 glt, 98, Turbo oil

Got it all apart and found the blinking oil sperator.

Also found this little surprise. Guess it was warm hiding spot to build a nest at some point. Hopefully he's not still hiding somewhere.

also check the sensor right at the air intake to the turbo, the hose that connect turbo to air filter , that sensor need to be clean up , and tight the hose clamp to the turbo, that's where the oil is coming from.

Doug,

Did you ever solve the problem with the leak around the turbo? I have a leak that looks almost identical to yours, and I wanted to you if you found the cause.

Thanks,
Tyler

In my case, it was a clogged PCV system leaking oil down onto the exhaust manifold.
