V70 XC, 1998 - loud pinging under console - viscous coupler?

We recently replaced front tires which were worn lower than the rear. As soon as we put the new ones on I started hearing intermittent loud metallic pinging it sounded like on each axle turn. Our good local mechanic diagnosed a bad viscous coupler and also the drive shaft carrier bearing is going. He ordered it through the dealer but it came with an extra 6" of shaft coming out of it more than the existing coupler (and cost $1400). He had to bring them both to the dealer to show them and we are trying still to find the right part. But I saw another post saying if the sound is under the console check the flexible shaft coupler in front of the VC?

Also a buddy gave me the drawing/part number and I think it is 9183905 that is the VC - can anyone confirm?

I might drive 100 miles to get this worked on. Should I have it removed before driving?
Also should I get new rear tires to mitigate the pinging?

Please advise!

A new one? Why so hard on yourself. Get it rebuilt for half the cost!
For now, just remove the DS. It'll do just fine in FWD.
( But you may miss your AWD! I know I would...))

And DO NOT fall into the ABS trap...The dealer will get you for over $1000!
You can get THAT rebuilt for a fraction as well.

Ouch! $1400 is a lot of money, and that's just the parts. You may end up spending half as much as the car is worth by throwing parts at the noise without really knowing the source of it. I tried to answer your question about possible sources of the noise on your other post. I just wanted to add one thing. If you do get the driveshaft fixed and keep your AWD, you really should make sure all four tires have the same tread depth. These AWDs are very sensitive to differences in tires and these differences can cause further damage to the bevel gear that connects the transmission to the rear driveshaft, another very expensive part. Spending another $200 on tires is probably a good investment to keep the AWD going. If you go FWD, it shouldn't matter that the front and rear tires are different.

I had drive shaft drama this fall and removed it and drove around in FWD for 2 months. With out the drive shaft my XC was faster and got an extra 1 or 2 mpgs. I few days before a snow storm I installed a rebuilt drive shaft from Colorado drive shaft and the AWD is back in action.

Tracking down issues is fine, but . . .

My 1994 has 190,000 on it, and makes plenty of odd noises, but runs great.
It's the equivalent of an 85 year old in great overall health but with bad hips.
Grandpa's overall well-being would be best served by staying out of the hospital.

SO here is a follow up. Nothing has been done. I did get a refurb drive shaft from Colorado drive shaft - thanks for the referral. However the dealer says the viscous coupler is on "national backorder". They have promised it for the past 7 business days even saturday but each day it doesn't show up they tell my mechanic its on backorder. I think the parts guy doesn't have the motivation to get on the phone and find a warm body to talk to wherever he's getting the part so I'm going to call him tomorrow.
I will just ask him to remove the drive shaft if we can't get the coupler.

In the meantime does anyone know where I can get a rebuilt/used/new viscous coupler (aka clutch I think?)? I believe it is part number 9183905 can you confirm this also?

Thats the right part number if you have a later VIN

Is the Viscous Coupling $375?

I'll get one too.

Also, My car has some noise but not huge - my mechanic told me it's a bad VC. As my tires are surely mismatched - we I got the car, the state safety inspection guy made me change the front tires as those are worn out - will installing 4 new tires decrease the noise?
