2000 S80 2.0T Transmission Problems

Post by pksarkar »

Hi Guys,

Got myself and the family into quite a sticky situation today. We were driving back home after a long holiday from the airport and after about 40 kms, the car threw "Transmission Service Required" message on the dashboard and it immediately lost power.

The car was sitting in a friends garage for the last 2 months while we were on the holiday. I checked the fluid level and refilled a couple of litres of Dex IIIG but that didn't help. My check engine light and the transmission service message are still there. If I let the gearbox cool down then the gears engage but the moment the oil heats up it's stuck in neutral.

Is my gearbox fried?? Will a change of fluid and filter help?? By the way, I have the 5 speed auto in my car.. Does this take the Dex IIIG as the correct fluid?? Can someone give me some idea on what could be the problem?? Will I have to rebuild the gearbox? Help will be greatly appreciated..

Dex is the wrong fluid for the 5 speed!!!
Youre supposed to use 3309!
Flush it now and put 3309 in it.

Hi Guys,

I can't find Mobil 3309 here in Fiji. Is there a substitute for this oil? Also the local BMW dealer has the fully synthetic oil for the new BMW range. Can I use that oil?

I'm pretty sure you can use T4 fluid. But give your Volvo dealer a ring and see what they say about that.

Hi Guys,

I'm still waiting for the transmission oil. Got the car towed to the house and it's sitting in the Garage. While taking my other car out of the garage yesterday I noticed a huge pool of transmission oil under the car. It has started leaking oil for no reason. I never had any leaks from the gearbox before. It seems to a pool of the dex III I had poured in by mistake.

I had to start the car to load it on the tow truck. Will the DEX III in the gearbox harm it? Also can anyone give me a reason why it has suddenly started leaking?

Cheers

Hi Guys,

I got down and changed the transmission oil with the Toyota T4.. That is an equivalent of Mobil 3309 which I could not get here in Fiji.

Anyway the oil in the gearbox was sludgy and smelt burnt. I have taken out about 7-8 ltrs of oil and replaced it with new oil. Also I've disconnected the battery for the day hoping it will reset the computer..

I did try to drive the car after changing the oil and it was the same.. Drove for a few meters and then lost drive completely. Will this be resolved once the code has been reset or is by gearbox gone down the drain?

Help and advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Yes I did find the leak. It was leaking from driveshaft side. I have cleaned the place after changing the oil and will inspect it today evening to see if it's still leaking. I may have to change the driveshaft oil seal if it still leaks.

But I'm still scratching my head with this gearbox problem.
