"Over-turboed" S80 T6?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

"Over-turboed" S80 T6?

Post by Rubes »

When I bought my car, the check engine light was on. I told the dealer that I wouldn't buy it until they fixed the problem (not just cleared the light). They took it to a licensed Volvo repair shop, and they told me it was over-turboed. I guess one of the turbos is always on...? The throttle was really sensitive, and it seemed like I was either idling, or floored. They said it won't hurt it to drive like that, but if I do floor it, the turbo can go back on itself, and damage the turbo(s). I told them to fix it, then I'd buy it.
They replaced "something" and the throttle felt much more normal. He said "You can stomp it to the floor now, no worries." Then I went around a corner a week later, floored it, turbos full ablaze, and the check engine light came back on, and I'm back to where I was before I bought it.

Over-turboed? Anyone heard of this?

Bad turbo control valve or wastegate actuator? It sounds like the wastegate on one of the turbos is stuck full open. Normally, they are actuated by vacuum pressure caused by increasing RPMs and throttle pressure.

The question with your car is...which turbo?

What's the check engine code you're getting? We'd all have a better idea if we knew the exact code/description of the problem.

I agree with Burn most likely a waste gate stuck, this happened to my 04 Ram Cummins Diesel got a over boost code. Dealer replace the turbo complete under warranty. If they are saying "over-turboed" I would find some place else to have my car worked one. Unless Volvo actually does call it that, but it is a over boost condition in truth.

"Over-boosted" is what I meant, not over-turboed, sorry. I haven't had the code checked yet, so I can't say for sure which one it is. Actuator sounds familiar.
I will post the code once I get it checked, I was just wondering if it was possible that the dealer and/or the shop was full of crap.
