Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I need to change the ATF in my V70.

Is there any chance you could re-host or re-upload the photos from your write up E170_Driver?

Thanks in advance from over the pond!

Same as here, just skip the part with going under the car to drain the sump. The clip at the return line may break so it's good to have a spare one ready. The return line is very hard to remove the first time, keep the green clip depressed and pull strongly on the line. Use a 3/8 tube

The original quote was A picture is worth ten thousand words.

SIMPLE D&F is safer if you are new to this task. CN90 says to "keep it real simple" and do it like an oil change routine, but every few hundred miles -- spread it over 4-5 routines to replace most of the old fluid. AND then line it up with actual oil and filter change schedule for upkeep.

ATF flush aka Gibbons Method takes resetting fluid counter with VIDA, and few drive cycle for adaptation. It could open a can of worms.

What pix do you need to get started?

"Gibbons" method, not Gibson.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the info.

Just did my '05 XC70 which I've inherited from my parents. 160,000 miles, most of those in the Texas heat and there's no service record of the fluid being changed. Regular commuter/highway miles and no towing. Prior to the change the transmission was pretty normal -- which just some bogging in shifting down from 4-3 on occasion which was noticeable. It seemed a little bit "lazy" in not wanting to shift when under load.

First checked the level at 80C using Vida to confirm where it was before doing this. Did a drain and fill, got 3.3L out of brown but not burnt smelling fluid. Magnetic drain plug had a pretty gooey, gray paste on it that took some wiping. No metal seen in the fluid. Put 3.3 of Aisin Warner 3309 in and reset the fluid change counter with Vida -- which I know is a debatable topic (and not entirely necessary) but IMHO it makes sense to start with a reset counter and not inherit 15 years of data with the new fluid (and just to be clear for those who are new to this -- this is not resetting the transmission adaption). It is strange to me that there's no way to access the actual data of the fluid counter (that I know of at least).

Took it out for a test drive and it was a noticeable and good difference. It shifts a lot more and quicker now, the downshifting slowness is gone. The only thing I noticed was a few harder downshifts when off the throttle. I'm sure once the TCM adapts to the new fluid things will change a bit. I was pretty leery about doing this given it's mileage but definitely glad I did.

Plan is to do another d&f in about 200mi, then the Gibbons method perhaps. Doing another d&f b/c I thought I had a crush washer but didn't, although I have to admit I kinda like the simplicity of the d&f method. But we'll see. On the next one I'll see if I can snap some photos for the article since they are missing.

Thanks , will look forward to pictures.

That gooey paste is metal/abrasive from the clutches But that is totally normal.

Reminder ..it’s good to renew o-rings the first time you do this, and have new clips on hand too.
