Air pump, bypass check engine?

I know the Air Pump issue is well covered here but is it possible to keep the check engine light from coming back on by disconnecting the pump (or something else)? We have ran ours (1998 V70) for at least 5 years with the light on due to Air Pump. Even the Volvo adviser told us it was a secondary pump and not imperative to the engine, etc. So, we don't have emissions to pass, etc. and was wondering if we can simply unhook something, not have the check engine light be ON and go on driving. Thanks.
