Passenger seat recline problems

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Passenger seat recline problems

Post by Purpose »

2001 S80

Seat will move back/ forward and rotate on an axis. However, the recline, bring forward lever does not work.
Any suggestions on how to diagnose/ fix this problem?

thanks in advance

If this is the 'tilt' of just the seat back, you likely have a problem with the cable that runs from the motor to the worm gear assembly. My son has this problem on his 94 850. The cable breaks or wears or somehow 'shortens' itself so that it will not engage the worm in the worm gear assembly. Someone posted how to repair this by shortening the housing 'tube' inside which runs the cable. Try doing a search. The other possibility I guess might be a blow fuse? Are you saying it won't tilt forward or backward i.e. either direction?

Exactly, wont tilt forward or backward, but the entire seat will move.

I dont think it is a fuse because the fuse grid does not appear to send different functions from the same seat to different fuses.
given that the entire seat will move forward/ backward, I think the cable may be the issue. or maybe a swithch.

My old V70 (rip / totalled) had this problem. Moving and playing with the switch (mostly pushing in and forward REAL Hard) got it to work. It turned out to be the contacts in the switch - totally grunged up. Cleaned put back together and it worked for the 3 months before totalled.

Thanks, much appreciated.

How do you get to the contacts in the switch. have not seen a map in the manual, and at least at first glance under the seat could not see anything that I thought was helpful

I removed the switch and without taking it apart sparayed "CRC QD Contact Cleaner No. 03130" Quick drying no residue formula.
I used practcally the whole can and saw the "black gunk" coming out. If it did not work with this I was going to tear it apart - I did not have to. I had the same problem with drivers side master window control (opening not closing rear window) and this also worked for that. I avoid using "oily" residue sprays because it could attract more dirt and dust. Wear glasses or eye protection cause spraying through the cracks you get "bounce off" and it is not good for the eyes (burns - I know - experience!!)
Hope this helps - I am sure there is a way to open the switch but I have not had to. There was a thread about removal and taking apart the window switch with pictures.
Good Luck

Re read your question. If you meant getting the switch out I had the remove the side plastic the it was supported in.

Thanks, very helpful.

Is the switch located directly behind the seat recline lever? Do I have to pull that plastic piece at the base of the seat on the side where the controls are off in order to access the switch?

My car was a 2000 V70 and it was the drivers seat and yes I did have to pull the plastic "base" off
