S80 Text Information Window dark

What began as not displaying the Miles Remaining Before Empty in the Text Information Window a couple of months ago has escalated to no display at all.

When brought to the attention of my local dealer during a visit for other work, it was suggested that an aftermarket fuel meter would be less expensive than diag cost for the display. Since then, the display has gone totally dark.

Is there an easily replacable dedicated computer/module that controls or drives these functions for the display?

I don't know whether this is related but, the fuel guage is now eratic. It now sometimes displays near empty when more than a half tank remains. This began happening around the same time that the display went dark for all funtions.

If you rotate the ring around the stalk does it still stay dark?
