engine miss/stutter at highway speeds

Post by irbyjr »

I have a '96 960 sedan. Just recently the 6 cyl. engine seems to miss or stutter on the highway ONLY when I exceed about 60 mph. If I slow down a bit to 50-55, the miss goes away. Does this sound like a fuel supply problem (pump, injectors, or what??)
Thanks,
Irby

How long is it since you replaced the fuel filter and air cleaner. Both of those could cause higher speed misfire if dirty.

Have you checked for fault codes?

Haven't checked the codes yet, but will. Both air and gas filters are not very old.
Thanks a bunch.

I recently had this same problem with my 1993 960. Replacing the spark plugs did the trick for me.

mstebbins815, welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Thanks for all the suggestions. The problem seems to have gone away for now. I do plan to check the codes soon, however. I was wondering if water in the fuel might have been the problem????

Possible but unlikely as it doesn't restrict itself to certain speeds.

Update:
While cruising at about 40 mph, the engine(?) seemed to quit and restart rapidly about 5-6 times. I noticed that the gearshift (accidently) was in 3rd range rather than Drive. Could this mean that rpm is suspect? Or, how about the transmission trying to shift? The cutout is really abrupt, NOT like just turning the ignition off and on.
I get the same engine conditions sometimes on the highway above 55-60 mph. I still plan to have the code check done.
Thanks again,
Irby

Finally got to the shop -- the "cam sensor" was replaced and all seems OK now. I hope that was all!!
