2001 XC70 front end clunk & squeaking, 86K

Front end clunking sound when going over bumps, rough road, etc. Was intermittent, but getting worse, and now notice a sqeaking sound also. I noticed a 3/4" gap at top of strut tower, inside engine compartment, which I haven't noticed before.

Your spring seat at the top of the strut tower needs to be replaced. You can probably grab the top of the seat and spin it right around with your hand at this point. I often recommend using the XC90 SUV seats to replace the -70/-60 series ones, as they are built much better. Make sure to have an alignment done afterwards.
