One question though: why did you remove the intake manifold? It looks like there is room to remove the engine with it attached. Is that true, or do things shift when removing it so you have to take it off? Thanks, Rick
In my other tutorial I dropped the transmission out the bottom - it was a lot easier to do that if just replacing the transmission.

It's been awhile since I've done this but IIRC in order to take the engine out the top you have to disconnect lots of stuff under the intake manifold. Therefore it must come off. Just going by memory, could be wrong though.

wheelsup, I'm using your tutorial to ready my engine/tranny for pulling out the top. I'm at the point of disconnecting the gear selector cable. Does the transmission have to be in Park to do that?

The reason I ask is because I haven't pulled the axles yet (I was just waiting for some assistance), but I could go ahead and pull them if the selector needs to be in Park. The axle nuts are loose. I like to remove/replace axles in Neutral but not really necessary I guess.

Thanks for a great tutorial :!:

Turtle, just to confirm, there are a couple of fistfuls of wiring under the manifold. I labeled all mine before disconnecting just to make for quick confusion-free reconnect. The manifold comes off easy with TB attached. I even left the IAC on it.

The gear selector position won't matter since you have re-align everything anyway once you've got the new transmission in.

For that part of the process you'll essentially be following the procedure for the PNP switch replacement. Using whatever method you prefer you'll align the switch and secure the center bolt so it makes no difference what gear you are in when you take everything apart initially.

I am soooooo doing this. I want to take the opportunity to get the most out of my 1996 850 GLT. So, while everything is apart, any other things I should do?

The most incredible tutorial I've ever seen in my life....well, may be with the one my wife showed me "how to build your own child in one or two steps"...
