Where is ABS sensor and how to clean?

Post by samkim69 » Sat May 01, 2010 6:54 am

First of all, I tried to find the post here, but I can't find any picture of abs sensor. If I missed it, sorry.

I found many useful posts about how to replace ABS module, but I want to clean sensor first.

Can anyone let me know how it looks like or where it is?

I took 4 wheels off today and had a look behind wheels. but still not sure which one is which one-.-;.

The ABS sensors are located behind the brake disc, over the axle shaft, are a cilindrical piece with two cables on the body..

you can take a look on this link...

You can clean them with a soft brush, I dont recomend to use any kind of cleaner..maybe a dielectric cleaner...but with care..
after clean the sensor tight it to 10 NM (7.5 lb ft)

On a '98 it is 99% likely that the module itself is bad but I cannot say that it isn't a bad thing to check out the sensors and the reluctance rings or tone rings as they are often called.

On the FWD versions the fronts are fairly easy to get to to clean. The sensor is screwed into the top of the steering knuckle and the rings are slightly inset into the back of the steering knuckle.

The rears are a bigger deal. The sensor is fairly easy but to get to the rings you need to remove the rear brake caliper and the rear rotor.

You can see the rear rings (this is a FWD car and a AWD may be different) in pictures 3 and 8 in my writeup here:
