Timing Belt - what's the story
Timing Belt - what's the story
I am on the verge of purchasing a Volvo. I love the look of them, I know they are great cars - but every ad I see either says the timing belt needs to be changed soon or just changed the timing belt. This concerns me. Also, air conditioning. I live in Miami, Florida - I NEED A/C - how are they on the Volvo. You probably want to know what year I am looking at - frankly, I am looking at various years and price of course is my main consideration. I would appreciate any other information you all could provide me in helping me make my decision. Thank you all.

Here's the story - All Volvo twin cam motors are interference motors and if the timing belt breaks then you need to replace at least the valves on the intake side. Its expensive so people watch it carefully. These twin cam engines don't wait long past their suggested timing belt change interval to break. So if you get a twin cam then make sure the belt has been changed.
The older models like 240's 940's and 740's have mostly a single cam engine (some came with 16valve twin cams but its rare) . Those can break the belt and have no issues. Just repalce the belt and you are on your way.
As far as the AC goes - Let me give you the input of a chubby, diabetic who is always sweating. They are Fantastic. In all of the cars I have had Volvo's are my favorite for AC. Its like sitting in your fridge. If the car you buy needs some AC work then get it done - well worth your time.
Good Luck on your purchase,
John

Hey,
...ust bought a 2000 V40 (wagon).....extremely clean and onyl 65K on it. The A/C works great ! Up here in Chicago we have been baking a bit, inthe 90s for past weeks or so and...the air conditioning has performed quite well. I was a bit concerned
especially in stop/go traffic, but...it works good ! On timing belt: follow O&M guidelines and you'll have a great car for many yrs.

All the Volvos I have owned had awesome AC. The best is in my current Volvo S60R. You can freeze in my car if you put the AC on the coldest setting. Personally, it is to cold for me on that setting.
