Driving with cracked radiator? help

I just bought a 1999 Volvo V70 XC, with 138,000 miles.. Extremely clean, except it has a slight seep (from a crack) in the upper passenger side of radiator. I was aware of this and drove from Lexington KY to Indy with no issues.. In fact, it is only with local driving that I have had to add any fluid. (I have put in one gallon in 800 miles of driving)

I am going to have a new radiator put in next week, but here's the question... I am supposed to be in North Carolina over the weekend... Is it safe to go 650 miles there (& 650 back) as it is?

Runs like a dream, and the reservoir light comes on with coolant still in the tank... really hate to rent a car, but don't want to damage this beauty..

I won't put stop leak in it, so that's not an option....

I'd say you were lucky to drive back without problems. I would not go the 650 there and back (1300 miles?). If it gets hot enough, the pressure will blow out that small crack and make it a large crack or hole. If you're going up a long hill or something and your coolant is suddenly gone, expect to have to pay big $ for a head gasket repair and possible engine damage.

I say don't run the risk. I had to replace my radiator last year from a crack the suddenly appeared. Never had any coolant loss or anything, then one day I come home, park the car, go back out 5 minutes later and there is a big freaking crack on the upper passenger side (same spot as yours, common failing point) and a nice river of coolant in the street. I limped it to the service center a mile from my house. But 1300 miles on a small crack could mean big crack when you least expect it. If you like your car, don't drive it for now.

I know it's not what you wanted to hear, but I have a feeling my opinion will be the same as many others on this board.

I wouldn't drive it that far. The crack will only get worse. That radiator has given 11 years of service, just replace it. Mine went out at 138,000 miles too. If you've already been driving with it leaking, you've been driving on borrowed time. Rent or borrow somebody's car for the weekend.

It's one thing puttering wround town but that pinhole leak can crack and split the radiator wide open at any time......and you are SCREWED
