2000 S40. Today the engine started racing. Easily run down the road 40 mph with out touching the pedal. Had to shut it off in gear with engine racing. Looked over the ETM forum but did not find any S40's there. Anybody else had this issue?

Your S40 does not have an ETM.

I would see if the throttle cable is stuck. If it's stuck at or near full throttle, the engine won't start.

finally got it started, it was running like crap. started smoking too. Before I started it, I checked the oil, water, and transmission fluid. All fine. I was trying to get it to the mechanic, and I didn't think I would make it. It was like it was choking out and smoking too. Not thick smoke but enough. Suddenly it started running fine like it always has and made it to the mechanic. Of course when I get there, it is fine. Running smooth, not smoking and starting with no problem. It had a smell like from the catalytic converter. Mechanic said sometimes they can get stopped up or go bad which could be why the car was acting like that. Left it there so we shall see.

Bogging down and then suddenly being OK points to 1 of 2 things to me:

1) Mass airflow sensor on its way out.
2) Fuel pressure. Less likely if it's perfectly OK now, but see if it happens again.

What color was the smoke, black? Black smoke indicates the engine is running wayyyy too rich, caused by a bad O2 sensor, or more likely, the MAF.
