Air conditioning compressor won't kick in

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Air conditioning compressor won't kick in

Post by BillsWifesCar »

Hello, Thanks for reading. On our 2000 S80, when the A/C button is pushed, the button lights but the compressor does not kick in. The fan works in all positions. I have replaced the heater a/c control panel on advice (apparently bad) from a mechanic I spoke to, with a used one but no change. Could it be a relay or fuse somewhere? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Bill

Just had this happen myself. The ECC was bad. Replaced with used but these things are finicky, they must be paired with the vehicle and you are not able to do this with the used part. Dealer charged $241 to install new one including software install. I bought from volvowholesaleparts.com for 723.10. Maybe you have a different problem but this was my solution.

I am not familiar with the Volvo AC system but many US car manufactures install a switch which will prevent the compressor from starting when the freon presure is low. You may want to buy a kit which enables you to recharge the AC system for about $40 to see if it helps. Do not buy a kit with a plastic valve which screws onto the R134 can of freon as most are not durable. Find one which is metal.

Good luck.
