Odometer Not Working '96 850

Post by 30volvos »

Hello,

I know about the simple fix on the odometer sprocket but my shop told me that is not the problem. Instead I need to replace the entire instrument panel since my odometer stopped working. My wife loves to push the reset each time its fueled, but after recent reset it stopped. Speedometer is fine and the computer is keeping track of the mileage apparently. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Your shop is wrong. You simply need the new odometer gears. I buy mine from Jeff at www.odometergears.com . There is an outstanding writeup in the repair database. I replace both gears while I am at it on mine (all 3 of them have failed on my 850s). The small gear is always bad but the extra $25.00 for the large gear gives me confidence that I won't be making that repair again.

Be sure to read the entire thread on the odometer gear repair by clicking on the link at the top to "Comment on this Repair", there are several additional tips and tricks. I would give you the links but I am on dial-up Internet at the moment.

Here is one of the write ups. Your shop is most definitely wrong, the gear is in fact broken. Props to your wife for keeping such good track of the gas mileage, I do the same thing. More people should be so smart.

Did the little gear recently- piece of cake. Got the gear from 'radioman' on ebay for 8 bucks. He sends the link to the write up from this site. Took me 26 minutes start to finish.

I just did mine on a 97 turbo model. The tutorial is great. Please be mindful that the turbo model requires one to take that brass nut off on the backside of the turbo gauge prior to prying the cluster body apart. The tutorial shows everything except it is not a turbo model shown. I was partially destructive this time, merely popped the needle off. I should have read everything I could have before starting.

Well it took many months, but I finally handed the gears I bought (per your recommendations) to a new mechanic and they fixed a 2 year old problem. I was going to do myself, but didn't have any way to read the computer in order to update the visible odometer. Since we had to remove the same dash, I let them fix and roll the odometer to the actual miles at the same time. All is well. Odometer works and the car now displays actual miles... In almost 2 years it only moved 6K and the mileage is accurate. Thanks all!

and do you need to do anything special in relation to the airbags when tinkering with the dash to get to the odometer?
