The trigger has broken off the auto gear shift knob in my 04 S60. I can't believe how complex this area in the console seems to be, I was hoping to just get a new stick from the wrecker but getting the old one out is a major puzzle. I haven't been able to figure out how to remove the console properly to get at the shifter. It would be great if just the knob itself was removable but it doesn't seem to be the case. I'm afraid I will break something in the console if I'm not careful, any help would be appreciated, I can't seem to find anything on the topic and I have been looking for that page or a repair manual with no success as well.
I am most dissapointed that the trigger is a very cheap piece of plastic and the hinge loop just broke right off when the wife attempted to use the car.

To remove your knob you have to pull out two small plastic tabs on both sides of the interior, like 1 inch inside. To remove you cant place two small pieces of a metal saw (like 3.5 inch long)
If you cant repair the broken hinge...
Try buying a new one, or a great shape on a junk yard..look the inside.. and if your cant remove the old one..you can cut it with a razor blade, or small hand metal saw..

That is a good suggestion, its seems much easier than removing the console, thankyou.
S60- shifter trigger cracked. Fixed w/ bike tire inner tube. Good easy cheap fix. First duct tape broken plastic piece to keep spring from protruding. I used the inner tire tube from my mountain bicycle. Cut a section about 4 inches long. Turn it inside out, more uniform color, and pull over shifter. If you don’t have a bike you can buy an wide tire inner tube (not 10 speed tube, too narrow) for about $6.00. I hope this easy inexpensive fix helps.
