960 Power Steering Vibration at Low Speeds

Post by 30volvos »

Hello,

I have had a couple of 960s with the same problem and a couple of shops said there isn't much I can do.

When I turn the steering wheel at low speeds (5 mph) there is a vibration type of noise in the front. It comes and goes but different shops said the same thing. Not a problem, but funny how it happens when I pull in my driveway and the neighbors hear it. Any suggestions?

Thanks
Tom

Hi There Tom,

I'd assume that the shops would have checked the hydraulic fluid in the power steering reservoir? However, you know what happens when you make assumptions, so that would be the first thing I'd check. My system calls for Dexron-III, so back in October I flushed my system with Valvoline MaxLife Dex3 and it seems to be working well. I simply used a turkey baster to suck the old fluid out, replaced it with new fluid, and bled the system by locking the rack in both directions with the reservoir cap off and engine running. I know there are different bleeding procedures for different steering racks, so if you do the flush, you'll want to find that out.

Thanks Darrell and yes the level has been fine in both cars, but I am willing to try to replace. I didnt mention that it doesn't make this noise all the time and the last two days it has been ok, but I am sure it will be back.

Tom
