'00 S80 T6 Electrical Problem?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

'00 S80 T6 Electrical Problem?

Post by prettybrg »

Hello Everyone, Hope you can help me with an issue.

I have a 2000 S80 T6 here and it is obviously suffering from some electrical issues. The rear break lights are on the fritz, either the two tail lights turn on, or the top light in the back window does with breaking, never both at the same time though. Another issue is that it is throwing up warning lights, engine light, service light, break failure, etc etc they come and they go as you drive, usually they will come on at starting and go away with driving. The car is mechanically sound, transmission and engine both work fine, acceleration and shifting is perfect and the car isn't burning or leaking any fluids.

So what could be doing this? ECU is dead?

The throwing ligths on the dash could be glowing by a NEAR dead alternator, you have to check the voltaje on the battery, sometimes the regulator start to fail, or the brushes, and let the battery lowers the voltaje, loose the negative, who the dash thinks the car engine is off.

Start checking your battery voltaje, clean all the electric conections on the alternator, battery posts, and check again..

I agree that this is probably a regulator issue.

However, I would like to add that if you are experiencing these problems, to not use the AC/fan as the climate control module could get damaged by a varying swing in voltage.

Just to get a bit more detailed, I was on my way to work today and the engine light was on when I started the car, service light came on a few km's from home and a few more km's a "Break failure stop safely ASAP" message came popped up on the on-board computer thing with the ABS light, traction control light and even the parking break light turned on. The odometer and trip meter both stopped counting kiliometers.

I figure it is probably electrical, i'll check the Voltage Regulator with a multi-meter, any other tips and suggestions would great.

Thank you!

I would take it to a parts place that offers battery/alternator testing services and let them do a load test and test the alternator/battery charging if possible.

This does not sound like alternator failure. To me, it sounds like the classic ABS module problems.
Check this website out:
http://home.earthlink.net/~vicrocha/Vol ... 70_ABS.htm

This man can rebuild an ABS module for 1/4 the dealer price, and it will never fail again. There's also instructions on how to remove and send the module.
Good luck.

Yah jbrown, I am going to get my ABS module inspected by Volvo, if they suspect it I am going to send it to him instead of paying for a new one. This thread has a good example of what I am dealing with if anyone reading this has the same problem: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 2&start=28
