Flame Trap?

Post by nadz »

Does the metal piece of the flame trap need to be replaced? Does it affect anything if I just leave it as is?
Thanks.

All of my flame trap discs have been plastic, I just take them out and throw them away.

So should I replace the insert to a plastic one, or just leave the thing alone?

I don't know that we have positively identified the part you are talking about so I am reticent to tell you to throw it away. If you can toss up a picture of the part in question we can quickly identify it.

Innnnteresting. I have never seen one like that except on a 240.

There is no need for it in one of these engines. All it does is clog. You can remove it and reconnect the hose and not have to worry about it getting clogged up again for some time.

Or EVER since it is no longer there! ... Hehehe ... First time I ran across this I cleaned it. Didn't know what it was but it was nasty looking. Major crud & gook.
Then I read a few posts here & discovered what it was. So simple to get to I "got to it", popped it out & tossed it! ... Mine was plastic.
I'm not usually so keen to discard stock parts but this one needed to go! I take care of my equipment & this one is simply to protect folks that don't.
Volvo may call this a "flame trap" but it really is a device to stop catastrophy for those who don't maintain their equipment. It will clog before disaster, therefore forcing the required maintainence. +1 for Volvo.
Paying attention to maintenance? Justin is right, toss it! ... OH! ... +1 for Justin!! :D & +2 to Ozark lee for making sure we were all on the same page!

All of stock flame traps in these cars are plastic. The ones made of metal are from older Volvos, like from 240's.

I got rid of mine at my last oil change.

Also...Volvo stopped putting flame traps in s,v70's made from '97.
