Radio Backlight

Post by dannyck »

Hi guys,

I am new to this forum, just purchased a 2004 XC90. However, I just noticed that the backlight for the radio buttons from power down to the 7,8,9 numerical buttons on the left and the menu buttons on the right do not work. The lights for the buttons under that, like the climate control, are working just fine. Does anyone know how to replace these bulbs or have a link to how to get back there? I have done the procedure before in my old range rover so I just need disassembly instructions, a link to a repair manual or something would be incredibly awesome. Thanks!

Dan

P.S. My lower brake lights on both sides are out, and I get a "check stop lamps" message every time I press on the brake. I noticed that the top brake light still works just fine. Has anyone else had this problem and know how to fix this? Thanks again.

To fix your radio backlights- the bulbs are tiny little bulbs within the unit. From what I have read they are hard to find. but essentially the unit has to be removed and opened up to replace the bulbs. I have the same issues and it is irritating to say the least. I simply have not done it because it is more trouble than it is worth to me.
As for your lower brake light lamps- go to your volvo dealer and get the bulbs. you might be able to find them at you rlocal patrts store- I was not able to get them there. Mine gave them to me for free! This apparently is a common issue.
To replace them - use a pocket screw driver and pry the covers out gently. you will see an area on each one where the tension tabs are located- they just pop out. remove the old bulbs pop the new ones in and replace the covers. The check position lamp message will go away once you replace them.

hope this helps.

You can get the bulbs at radioshack. They are a tiny bit longer, but they fit. Here is a link.

I just replaced all ten while I was in there. Took me a half hour. Two tips, disconnect the battery, and don't unplug any electric connectors on the radio. If you do you will have to take it to the dealer to reprogram it,$$$. There is enough slack to get to the bulbs.
