Considering XC 90

Post by tmctague »

Hi, I'm new to the forum.

We are considering a Volvo purchase. Have looked at v70 (2000-2005), XC90 (2005) S40 (2000-2001) and V90 (1998). Have read Edmunds, KBB and this forum.

Was considering the 2005 XC90 since I was at a Health and Safety conference during that year in France, and I saw a driver safety presnetation in which the presenter showed that the XC90 is the safest car on the market for rollovers. His presentation, with graphic pictures of crashes with dummies placed where your head would be during the crash, was very convincing. However the KBB reviews are disappointing in terms of expensive repairs...any comments?

Thanks.

Hi tmctaque - I too have been looking at the XC90 (used and depreciated$$); from what I have gathered by perusing this forum is that the T6's are problematic. Mainly because of tranny problems and by the way, tranny problems are the most aggravating because most DIY people do not attempt these repairs and can be big bucks to have them even look at (I do not trust tranny shops). I am a DIY person so the very mention of tranny problems (or any problems on the drive train past the engine) makes me nervous. The 2.5L models seem to be the most practical selection. I am not well versed on years and trim packages but I would be looking only at the 2.5L models. I have a 850 wagon with 160k with a 2.5L engine and I would recommend this power plant to anyone who was looking for reliability. As for 'power' that is a different story. The 2.5L is for drivers that are not looking to be competitive/aggressive drivers. Do not expect to be the leader of the pack, just part of the pack that sure to arrive. As far as safety you cannot beat a Volvo... heavier gage steel and always on the leading edge of safety amenities.

'hope this helps

We have an 07 XC 90 which we have had since Feb.. No problems so far. We just love it. No doubt for the safety features but the ride etc.
I had done my research before buying this one.
I am thinking anything older than 07 or 06 for sure could have issues. Like you say the T6 are definitely ones to stay away from.
My daughter drives a 96 850 wagon which she got as a junior in college. She just loves it.
Only thing, it does use oil.

Agreed that the 2.5 power won't blow anyone away, but I wouldn't call it underpowered as some have. Chances are you are not buying a 5 cyl to tow 10K lbs around. I have put about 18K miles on in the last 1.5 years and many of those miles were with 6-7 passengers (4-5 adults) and a loaded roof box going through mountainous terrain. Haven't had any problems with it, though I did cut my teeth on an 850 so preventative maintenance is a priority for me.
