95 850 turbo Air Cond

Post by kenhallberg »

The compressor was new two years ago. System is fully charged and has not been recharged from compressor replacement which was done at a shop. Last 4 months the compressor keeps switching on and off every couple of seconds. Any suggestions other than take it to a shop. I am a fair mechanic.

Check your clutch gap. If the shims are gone, then that is a classic symptom. The other thing to check would be the low pressure switch. I guess I'd check that first. Pull the connector off the low pressure line, near the firewall, and jump the connection with a paper clip. If all works, and the compressor stays on, then you have a switch problem.

You can also check the gap on the compressor clutch. I used a spark plug feeler gauge. Should see somewhere around .012 to .016 for the gap.

These items are all easy to check before spending money on a/c.

Hey, you guys only have, what another couple of weeks of hot weather. We are in the 100's, and will not see a break until October. Good luck.

If it is cycling on and off I vote for a low charge which is the pre-cursor to an evaporator change. If you have a gauge set check the pressures, otherwise you can buy a recharge kit that has a kinda-sorta gauge on it.

If you have a Harbor Freight nearby they sell a cheap gauge set for around $40.00.
