Ive been having this on-going vibration /roaring sound while driving. I got the front wheels up off the ground and put in drive and let them free spin. While watching it do this i noticed what looked like the cap over the cv axle bearing ( the bearing next to the inner cv joint ) on the axle moving a little.

While its doing this i can put my hand over the bearing cap and feel like a "click" sound inside it. Has anyone ever heard of a cv axle bearing on the axle going bad like this ? the car has 213k miles...

i gotta replace the axle anyways due to both boots being torn open..

**update* i took the cap off the pass side cv axle bearing and when i spin the bearing it sounds dry and there is a lil side to side play on the bearing.

A bad inner C/V joint will cause horrible vibration, particularly under acceleration on an uphill grade. How do the boots look and do you know what kind of axles you have?

thanks for the info lee... the boots on the outer and inner are shot. the inner joint is clicking pretty loud when i let off the pedal quickly with the front wheels off the ground. Im fairly sure this axle is original :o

It could be making all that noise, if it's really as gone as it sounds...a bad/loose bearing will howl like crazy and bounce all over the place...replace the axle (213 is pretty impressive, I wonder how long it has actually needed replacing?), cross your fingers, do a little dance, and hope it solves your noise issue

I get a click on my SR sometimes when I get off throttle so I am wondering if one of my axles are bad too.

I Hate That Sound !!!...but "Usually" a bad cv joint makes a clicking sound, and it usually happens on turns ! Makes me wonder, hmmmm...I would say it was the HUB and not the cv unit, think of it as replacing your wheel bearings with a HUB replacement.
You will know which one is bad when you turn, IE; turn left & right wheel (hub bearings) makes noise, turn right, left one sounds...Correct ??
Please let me know if this sounds like your problem.

thanks justin, im working on my "volvo to the gods dance" LOL. Papa, yeah, usually they'll click when turning mines not doing that on turns. The drivers side axle has been replaced also. I just replaced the drivers side hub and lower control arm/ball joint a few days ago thought that was it and it wasnt. It all needed replacing it was getting to that point anyways.

Ive done the swerve thing trying to unload the hub bearing and the noise doesnt change so i dont think the pass. hub is bad. The records i have show the pass. side hub has been replaced already. Im pretty sure its the cv axle/axle bearing causing my problems. Both boots on the pass. axle are torn open and have slung grease all under the car and the bearing thats actually on the axle i took the cap off and spun it and it sounds pretty dry and has some side to side play.

got the new axle in and that took care of the vibration... :) so, if you have a vibration you cant figure out, check your cv axles..
