the drivers side wiper comes off the window

Post by Dale95850 »

I just got a 1995 850 GLT Volvo for my Girl and looking it over one thing I found is that the window wiper blade comes off the window at about one o-clock on the steering wheel stays off the window till about the same point in the return to rest stop , it looks like a fairly new arm assemble and I put on a new blade ( the one I took off was OME with a wind jam on it but it didn't help it stay on the glass ? ) This is on the drivers side and it leaves the water right in the wrong place to drive safely. Has this ever came up before and what would be the fix , it seems to have good spring tension but not at that point on the glass I can't see a bent shaft ?

I'm having the same problem on my 2002 V40 passenger side. Any clues?

And yep, that looks like it will be a fun ride.

It is a common problem.

Start by pushing down on the wiper arm and torquing down the nut. From there you can just bend the arm.

I had that problem about a year ago. Took it to my Indy shop and inquired about new arms. The parts guy just came outside and bent the arm. Presto, fixed. Don't quite remember how he did it so ask around but it was an easy 2 second fix.

Bending the arm is not too bad of a job. It's described in this post:

Re: Windshield Wiper Arm loose left to right, and up/down

I agree with the advice above. I have a 97 855 GLT with 140K miles and I've had to bend my arm twice, once in 2004 and again just last week, to keep the driver's side wiper making good contact.
To bend the arm is probably less work than to replace the arm, but you may have to do it periodically. To bend the arm,
1: stop the wiper arms at the full top position by actuating them and shutting off the key at the top of the swing. Make a note of the location of the driver's arm on the windshield to simplify re-installation alignment,
2: loosen the nut (I think it's 13mm) and lift the arm off of the spline,
3: Put three or more layers of corrugated cardboard down on the floor.
4: Step on the backside of the arm while pulling up gently to induce a small bend in the arm. Mine needed to be bent about 1cm.
5: Reinstall.
Good luck!

Thanks for the tip on this guys! I probably should have been able to come up with this myself just from looking at it, but alas that's what this site is for.

Also, I just bent the arm at its thinnest and weakest location, and that did the trick. As mentioned above, 2 second fix. Why are the elaborate instructions for taking it off and doing a bunch of other complicated stuff needed?

You might not need the elaborate instructions... I just wrote up what I did to fix mine, which was pretty bent. You might not need to take the arm off the spline if the arm isn't too bent out of shape. :)

Ok I got the New wiper arm assembly , it was flat from the pivot bolt to the first part of the S turn ( the old one had a slight bend that was not letting the blade stay on the curved part of the window . The blade was not able to flex , because of that bend.) My fix to the old one was to lay it on a wood block and hit it with my rubber hammer from the back side two blows it straightened it back to flat , Now I have a spare . Thank You All for the input .
