ABS module - - needs programming?

It appears my ABS module is bad...the TRACS and ABS light come on every so often. My mechanic says that in addition to the part costing $300+, I may need to spend another $200 for "programming". I have no idea what's involved but does that sound right?
Yeah, I know there's a guy on the board that rebuilds these things but I'm wondering about the programming.

What? No. Not on a '98. It just needs to have the contacts resoldered, and then both of those lights will go away.

Thanks JRL....will the braking system be affected if I drive without the module while waiting for the rebuild? I'm sure the ABS and TRACS lights would light but that's no biggie.

You won't have ABS, but standard brakes, and you also won't have a speedometer.

If you have a GPS unit, most can function as a speedometer while you've got the module out.

^^^ As far as I know, he's currently the least expensive. Haven't heard any complaints.

Matty Moo is the only way to go! Once you install the module make sure you erase the codes and the lights will go off. I stopped at Advance Auto Parts and used their diagnostic code reader to check and erase them for free.

No! You don't need to clear the codes.

They will clear immediatelly when you go to a test drive after reinstalling the module.(If resoldering was a success).
