My V70 was in for its 72k service on Friday.
Last night the Engine Service Required message came up on the dashboard. I'm taking it in tomorrow to see what the problem is, but would like to have some pointers so they don't take advantage of me.
I believe it might be possible for me to read the codes - but I don't have a clue where to start.
Failing that, is there a standard list of things that would be covered by this error message?
Thanks
[NB - It's my first Volvo!]

Most service shops - and some auto supply stores - will plug a reader into your car and tell you the codes and what they mean. Jot the codes down and search for them here and on Google. If you are told you have a "455 code" you would search for information about it by searching for "P0455" (without the quotes). Sometimes the codes can be very helpful, sometimes they can be frustrating. You will find tremendous help on this Web site, where a hit on a code will lead you to what others have done about them and even repair procedures. If you want to become master of your own destiny or start working on your vehicle buy your own reader - search for "OBDII reader" or "OBDII scanner" on eBay and you will see hundreds of hits, they start around $20.

Could be anything from a loose gas cap to bad catalytic converters.
