squealing and high emissions

Post by pottypaula » Mon Oct 25, 2010 11:07 am

A couple of weeks ago my car started squeeling. It would only last a few minutes. Last week my car started to overheat even on short journeys. The temperature guage would shoot up to the red. So I'd pull over turn the engine off. After waiting for the car to cool down I'd start the car but it wouldnt start, as if the battery is dead. So I'd have to wait a bit longer, then it would start fine. I have now noticed I have a water leak. The water pump was replaced last year. It now squeals all the time.

It sounds like the water pump has committed suicide. What kind was it replaced with? Some replacement parts are very cheap and have a high failure rate among Volvos - I've had a few go bad within months on me.

Where is the coolant leaking from?

Is the drive belt adjusted correctly? If not that will squeal and affect the cooling system.

Bill.

Water pump replaced. Drive belt fine. Still squeals. Nearly all the time now and a lot louder.

How old is the belt? As they age they leave a coating of rubber on the pulleys and this can cause a squeal.

No idea. But its now the least of my worries. Car failed MOT on emmisions. The Mechanic said not a problem it can be fixed by adjusting the c.o. potentiometer. But he couldnt find it. Looked in Haynes manual, not where they said it is. Mechanic came to the conclusion that I cant have a 1.7 engine. Some previous owner must have changed it to a 2lt. I tried to look for the engine number but couldnt find the one on my owner docs. The number I did find has 1 letter and 6 numbers. My doc says 1 letter 12 numbers. Can the Mechanic be right? Am I looking in the totally wrong place for the engine number? Thanx for your help

Drive belt was replaced along with the water pump. Got the engine type sorted. Just leaves the high emissions. No point sorting squealing if it wont pass MOT
