Touble keeping my 2000 S40 running while cold

I have a 2000 S40 with 80K. I replaced the spark plugs at about 72K. Took it to the dealer because of something else and they said they thought it might need a new fuel pressure regulator; changed that about 70K. Changed the fuel filter about 72K.

When it's cold, it doesn't want to stay running; I have to sit in it and keep it about 1-2K rpms for a couple of minutes. After that, it will stay running but idle runs up and down between about 600 and 100 rpms. I also noticed when you floor it, after its warm it seems like its missing.

I have not taken it to an auto parts store to check codes. Can you buy a universal code reader that will work?

It would be helpful to have the codes read, if any are stored. You can usually have this done free at most auto parts stores.

To find a code reader to buy, do a search on the site using the 'Google custom search' at the top of the page. Just type in Code reader and you will be amazed at the number of posts that will turn up. There are several good recommendations.
