Post by RCR »

Today when i get under her on replacing the the Balancer I found someone has stolen the converter. I don't know these systems where is the O2 sensor? Will she run right with the Cat gone?

Some people will steal anything even if it is nailed down.

One book says the oxygen sensor is in the exhaust manifold whilst another says it is in the front pipe. The car will run without a cat and there are numerous references on various forums to removing the cat legally in some states.

Thanks Bill for the info. Where can I get a GOOD manual on this car? I have a Chilton but it covers so many different models that it's almost useless.
My V90 has 2 O2 sensors 1 pre cat one post. I see no wiring for the sensor that has been cut so maybe it's up stream some where.
I wonder what the boneheads used to cut it out with and how much they get on these for scrap? this was done cleanly I can say that!

Take a look inside the pipe. The more I look at this one the more optimistic that it was a well maintained and good running car before it got bunged up by the attempted theft.

From the photos you have got your hands on a very good car. If the cat that was on was an original Volvo unit it has probably been taken to put on another 740. We had one Volvo cat that did 250,000+ miles in 4 years and was still good when the car was sold.

The 740 has only one HO2S before the cat.

I have always used the Haynes manuals for every car my family and I have owned. I now have a pile of them going back to the 1970s and they do bring back some memories of lying underneath various cars killing gremlins. My 740 manual is Haynes covering 740 and 760 from '82 to '86 but the US version covers '82 to '88. Mine has a very limited section on fuel injection as most of our cars were still running on carbs in those days. There is no mention of oxygen sensors nor cats. No doubt the US version will cover them.

Yep some have parked here gone into stores came out fired up and found the cat cut out. Stinks.
Looks like there is an O2 sensor just behind the Turbo so I'm ok. I was concerned that this one had the second O2 behind the Cat like my V-90 does.
BTW here is the "other" Volvo in my stable.

It was the follow on to the 960. RWD, straight 6, 3 litre engine.

In my opinion one of the best cars made by Volvo, but I prefer RWD. I'm still trying to find one for myself but those for sale have usually been badly treated having been used to carry all sorts of loads inside and on an outsize roof rack which was available for them. They were very popular with the second hand furniture dealers and we stopped a 960 some years ago which had in it or on it a full bedroom suite of two double wardrobes, a dressing table and a bed all made of solid oak plus assorted other items.

A trip to the weighbridge showed a Gross Vehicle Weight of 6,748lbs. The manufacturer's GVW was 4630lbs. Slightly overloaded. The car was riding low but still capable of 70mph.
