99 s80 pcv cleaning?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

ok correct me if i'm wrong here but do you have to replace it??? can't you just clean and replace? or as far as that goes why isn't there a drain plug on it? really your just trying to avoid it getting full? couldn't a guy install his own drain plug with a self tapping screw at the bottom of the plastic box? i'd like to see pics of whats inside this thing? i've seen people retro fit there cars with the same type of setup with a plastic bottle. seems like a lot of work for such a simple device that should of had a drain plug to start with?

Great questions, this oil trap should not have even been made....im think it collects oil but its not supposed to get full, it should recirculate it,

basically volvo over-engineered half this car and this is one of those things
1999 Volvo S80 T6 Bought @192KM...now @224KM and counting the high priced maintenance miles ;-)

I think a self tapping screw should work just fine and simpler? The vapors that it traps is a liquid unless you don't drain it for 10 yrs!

You are correct, in most cases it doesnt need to be replaced, but merely decrudded. A drain plug wont help with that however, all (well most) the oil drains out and back into the sump when the engine is stopped. Its the buildup of coke and sludge thats the problem.

Most cars just redirect all the vapors right back in to the intake to be reburned. Much simpler but volvo tries to keep the motor cleaner by catching it in a container. If you have a way to drain it like every time you change your oil drain the pcv catch can then it won't build up and harden. If it does fill up in the catch can then this is how you get the blow by you see coming out of dip stick or oil cap.

I got a self tapping screw from the hardware store and put it in and it worked perfectly. But to my surprise nothing drained out? Anyone ever take one of these pcv containers apart? Are there 2 chambers or what? Either mine is in good shape and functioning properly or maybe theres 2 chambers and i need to tap the other one?

This is more or less what the inside of one looks like from a 5-cylinder engine. As said above, most of the oil drains out the lower port when the engine is shut off. But the sludge and crap builds up in the ports back to the engine block and eventually hardens into a clog that causes positive crankcase pressure.

I have a replacement PCV that I haven't installed, as of yet. Looking at the front of it, towards the bottom there is a there inch false wall. If you drilled in this range, you haven't hit a thing. As for the number of chambers, I can't tell but it is more than one.
