2001 v70 xc wagon,dash light problem

Last night my 2001 xc 70 wagon dash lights went funky. When starting the car ,the speedometer cluster dash lights were off and then got dim and then went bright in a matter of 10-15 seconds. The other dash lights were either off or very dim and stayed that way. The radio lights were completely off ( radio still works but you can't see what station), the shifting lever lights were off(park,reverse,etc),the lights for the heat/ac controls are super dim,the steering wheel cruise lights,radio volume controls are super dim and the headlight switch control illumination lights are off on the left side of the dash and not lit and when you pull the signal light for high beams the headlight will not stay in the high beam position when the dash light is turned to the on position. The headlight switch is not lit, They only work while holding the signal light in (like when it is off using it for flashing)
I did check fuses and they appear good and was wondering if maybe there is a relay that is faulty or maybe a ground wire issue or maybe the rheostat for dimming. I was thinking maybe a relay because of the way some lights are dim.
Anybody have any ideas or experiences of this problem before I start trying to fix this.

Your DIM module (dash) is probably taking a crap.
I believe used will work, try erie.

I agree sounds like a bad DIM.
Before buying used, you can send yours in to xemodex.

Solved problem,
It ended up being the light switch and dimmer switch (on the left side of the dash board). Got a used one and popped it in and now all the dash and radio lights work.

well, many years later..... just in case someone monitors this one.....

I have the same problem. also, headlight switch does nothing, light always on now. High beam won't stay on either.

How did you know it was the light and dimmer switch????

where did you get the used parts?

I got a used one on ebay. It wasn't to expensive and has worked perfect for all these years.

Old thread but I wanted to add thanks to the OP and a +1 for the solution. For me, dash/radio lights were illuminated but very dim, headlights remained on in parking mode, and front and rear fog lights were inop. A used headlight switch module from eBay was the fix for all of the above.
