Need used engine

Post by xallenx »

My 95 850 needs a new engine. Is there anywhere online that sells good and tested used engines? Thanks.

Just got a quote of $1400 just for labor from an INDY volvo shop. Does that sound right?

See Erie above

or www.car-parts.com - this is a salvage parts network and you will have to see what each vendor has as well as any warranty. Each one is different.

depending on your trust level. there's a guy or three on volvospeed with engines for sale.
shipping could be difficult though.

Another source is Tom's, they list a bunch of stuff on eBay.

I just merged your quote information from your duplicate post so I missed the part about having a shop do it.

Unless you have completely rebuilt the steering and suspension I wouldn't even consider paying $1400 in labor + the cost of the replacement engine + the cost of freight to get the engine to the shop. I'm not saying that the $1400 in labor is horribly out of line for a shop to charge (particularly if they included a timing belt change and new seals) but it is more of a question of what the car is worth.

If you can replace the engine yourself then a replacement engine is worth considering but if you need a shop I would just list the car on craigslist for a two or three hundred dollars and then buy another car. I picked up a decent S70 with just over 100k miles for my daughter for $1500.00 this spring. I will need to throw more money at it to get it through stage 0 but it runs and drives well for her.

Blown Headgasket. Current motor has 279K...So, I talked to another volvo mechanic and he said he would do the job for $800. He also found an engine with 78K miles on it at LKQ. I just can't get rid of the car since I've put so many hours changing parts like alternator, whole PCV system, A/C condensor, CV axle...etc. Plus just bought 4 brand new tires and wntire suspension has been changed. Car will be towed tom. and I told the mechanic to take his time since we are going out of town for two weeks. I'll keep this forum updated.

UPDATE: Well, I finally got her back. Total $$$ is 1100 for the 78K motor and 800 for labor (which included replacing and transferring all the new parts that I just recently replaced in my old motor.) Car is running GREAT! I'm just getting the front wheels aligned since my mechanic had to drop the engine from the bottom and had to disconnect the front suspension. So...wife is happy and I'm happy to own a car with no more oil leaks since all seals were replaced including the rear main seal!!
