Piston rings?

head gasket?

Turbo oil seals?

but deffinately burning oil from some where, check your level frequently.

possibly fail its next mot, depends how bad it is, could be expensive to fix if your not doing it yourself, does it allways blow smoke or is it just under heavy accelleration? would narrow it down to turbo problem.

its seems to be worse when you first start it and under idle conditions give it a good hard acceleration and it doesnt seem to be as bad

sound perhaps like there may be a small amount of oil leaking into the cylinders, perhaps the first sign of head gasket going??

how many mile has it done? & how handy are you with a spanner? & how much spare time have you.

if the answer to these questions is not very, then i suggest either leaving it till it gets too bad, or get a deisle specialist to look at it , (not a volvo dealership)

i have a 2000 S40 and every once in a while i see smoke in the rearview mirror--not necessarily when accelerating heavily, either. I get over 29 miles per gallon on the highway and it runs fine, so i'm just ignoring it to tell you the truth.

I had on my V40 TD -97 heavy black smoke when accelerating.
It was also hard to cold start the engine.

I was expecting the worst... Bad pistrons, rings etc...

It was just that the walves needed to be adjusted. Two of the intake walves did not close at all...
