Got a Volvo Campaign Notice in the mail (850)

Post by matthew1 »

...
The Reason for This Campaign

Volvo Cars of North America, LLC, has determined that in cerrtain cases, after prolonged exposure to extreme heat, the fuel tank in model year 1994-1997 Volvo 850 vehicles may develop seepage at the heat shield attachment. This is because the heat shield attachement locations may not meet certain Volvo specifications. When this occurs, a fuel odor may be present.
...
And it goes on to urge me to make an appointment with my dealer to have it checked. I'll let you know more when I take it in.

Isn't there a fuel tank recall in June-July, 2004? The above is a new one? :o

I believe it's the same one but it's expanded to other states. Originally, I think only hot-weather states were initally recalled.

Took ours in to Volvo Dealer right away... to avoid any possible exploding wagon issues.

Dealer replaced gas tank bushings - took less than an hour - no charges, no hassles.

Only problem - spouse spent the hour in the showroom drooling over XC90 - encouraged by helpful salesperson.

New rule: spouse no longer allowed to bring car to dealer!

I called my parents, who have a '95 850 Turbo, about this and my dad called Volvo directly. He was told about the recall and that they didn't have him as the owner of the vehicle because of him buying it used from an individual. Also, he confirmed that my '93 glt isn't part of the recall.

Bought ours used from an individual.... Volvo found us.

Twice actually - once for heated seats and now for gas tank.

I think they use the state's registration records - but I'm not sure.

I had a 96 850 and it was leaking gas and smelling. The bushings are the fix if you catch it early enough. The tank is plastic and the mounting tabs crack over time. They replaced my tank and filled it to boot. No charge

Strangely enough, I just had my 1997 850 go through state safety/emissions testing and fail for an evap system leak at the gas tank sender unit.

Now I get this letter in the mail (Volvo must have gotten state registration records) which says the fuel smell can result.

I'm thrilled others have had the entire tank replaced, since that's what my mechanic suggested since the fuel sender is not a separately available item.

Now once it's fixed, we can put more than 8gal in the tank!

I just called up Volvo and they said the service campaign HAS to be performed at a Volvo retailer. Which is bad for me because the nearest Volvo retailer to me is about 200 miles away....
