any way to disable the factory alarm ?

Post by BillyI »

does anyone know if the factory alarm actually disables the car from starting ? If so is there a way to disable the system without affecting other car functions? My kid had a dead battery/jump start episode .Apparently the sequence of events (dead battery ,unlocked doors ,ignition left on ,etc.) triggered the alarm ,which turns on the hazard flashers ,independent of switch control .I thought I had some electrical ghosts until I read the owners manual (go figure ) I would just as soon disable the alarm system then keep it turned on . Thanks -Bill

Remove relay 210/211 and use a jumper wire to jump the socket positions associated with pins 50E and 50F on the 210 side of the relay.

The relay itself is located in the lower central electrical unit which is inside of the car. It is mounted high on the inside of the firewall just below the main fusebox. It takes 3 T-25 Torx screws being removed (and some contortionism) to get the lower dash panel off and to get to the lower central electrical unit.

If you have a dealer nearby they can sell you a dummy 210 relay that has the jumper wire built in and it just plugs into the 210 socket position but I shudder to think of what they would charge for it.

Thanks Lee .Is the 210/211 relay a double relay like the 104/108 ,101/102 relays found under the supplementary fuse box cover ?Once the pins are jumped does the relay(s) get plugged back in ,or is it just left out ? Do you know if the alarm actually keeps the car from starting ?

Yes,alarm/immobiliser will prevent the car from starting, but in that case you will have a flashing red little light in the center of dashboard just by the windshield. When that little light flashes, that means the alarm/immobiliser is activated.

When you complete the procedure of jumping the relay, like Lee adviced you, then just plug the relay back in it's place.

Something just felt on my mind :!: ....maybe you will not be able to read & clear the engine codes when you jump the alarm/immobiliser relay because diagnostic line(k line) goes through the immobiliser.Am i wrong?

The 210/211 relay is a double relay as you described. If it were me I would just leave the relay out and forget about it. I live in a very low crime area so car theft on 15 year old Volvos isn't a huge problem in my case. Your local conditions may vary.

I will need to revisit the schematics to see if it will impair your OBD functions as Misha suggested but that requires a Linux network shutdown and a Windows boot so it may be later in the weekend before I can answer that question.

If I may jump in, I've also been trying to accomplish disabling the alarm on a 98 V70 but there is no relay 210/211, just an empty spot. The alarm is still active. Any ideas?

98-2000 s70/v70/xc70 and 98-2004 c70 use Denso made alarm using a control module that is to left and up under dash, almost behind headlight switch.
Pin B21 of alarm module grounds starter relay 2/35. Relay 2/35 contact closing coil is powered by ignition switch starter terminal.
If the alarm module doesn't provide the ground to start relay then the relay doesn't provide feed to starter solenoid and no cranking results.
Usually locking the car and then unlocking it should reset the alarm. The alarm module is also the door lock, fuel cap unlock, trunk lid latch, and interior light module.
Fuses 2, 13, and 18 are all feeds to the alarm/lock/light module. Those are the fuses in the box just in front of windshield on driver's side cowl.

I guess I have a somewhat related question. If I wanted to install a new stereo/headunit, will the alarm system cause issues?

Jimmy57, I think what you're saying is that since it's an all-in-one deal, there's no way to disable just the alarm?

I was hoping to disable the alarm because I've been trying to no avail to use a remote starter for lock and unlock (baby steps!). I've got the central locking unit out and pulse gray/red with negative (all remote starter documents suggest this as does the wiring diagram from this site) but can't get the alarm to disarm. If I sit in the car with the alarm disabled and manually lock the door, the remote starter unlocks it no problem. It will also lock but does nothing if the alarm is set.
