89 740 T will not idle, no power, gas smell

Hi, I am fairly new to Volvo ownership, and am very confused by these symptoms. While accelerating from a traffic light, my 740 all of a sudden barely moved until I the RPMs got up pretty high, then it picked up speed. I was able to get it into a parking lot, but then it died. I can start the car, but it usually will not idle. Occasionally it will idle very rough. I can keep it running if I push slightly on the accelerator. It smells very strongly of gas while it is running.

I have replaced the fuel filter, but have had no money to do more work on it yet. When I unplug the MAF, it makes no difference in the way it runs. Any suggestions on what other areas to check?

Also, I have not gotten any warning lights yet.

Check the MAF sensor.
