Hit pothole, is this tire + rim toast ? 96 850

Post by rollin_home »

Hi ,

Our 850 hit a pothole today , the tire was new and the rim was servicable.

Rim: Can you please tell me if the rim looks like it can be used again. Looks are not so important, so I was thinking that the edge of the rim could be hammered out and it may hold a tire.
If anybody knows where I can get another rim, please let me know .

Tire: I have no idea but can a tube be put in that tire and can the tire be re-used. The picture shows 2 small
cuts in the sidewall of the tire, my guess is that its toast but I thought I would ask if using a tube is an option when the tire is damaged like this one is :

The tire is dead. You don't want to risk patching that and then have it blow out on you and lose control. (I've had a blowout before - it's not fun).

The rim might be OK if it will balance out and hold air.

That looks pretty bad. There is a big chunk missing off the lip and I doubt a tire would be able to seal itself to that rim. I wouldn't even go through the trouble to try fixing it. Just scrap it and find another rim. Scrap value is about $10 for alloys.

Check your local Craigslist. Those rims are very common and can be had for at least $35-60 dollars each. Depending on condition. Ebay for sure has them in the 5 lug bolt pattern. If looks aren't that important like you said, a steel wheel would do the job for even cheaper.

That wheel is named Cetus and it is the most common of all Volvo wheels. Check with member Confused Al, I think he may have a set on his parts car.
