Is there a tutorial as how to use the On Board Diagnostic unit that is under the hood of my 92 850 N/A? I have a CEL...want to get some details. Can I also get transmission details?
AND...put a magnetic drain plug in 4,000 miles ago...did an oil change today...wow, the magnet was loaded with grey sludge (Clearly metal, in that it 'stuck' to the magnet)...this scares me.

My Haynes manual has instructions on using the under hood diagnostic unit. As for your drain plug, do a search for Mobil Labs or call them at 800 427 5905. For a small fee (around $25.00 five years ago) they will test your oil and tell you exactly what contaminants are in it and if metal is present they will say what part of the engine it is coming from. They send you a kit that has everything in it to obtain the sample along with detailed instructions and a postage paid box to mail the sample to them. The testing takes about a week after they receive it. I had the oil in my 95 850I tested when I bought it. The test results gave me a large amount of confidence in the engine along with a healthy dose of peace of mind.
