Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
Does your fuel gauge work or are you relying on a trip computer telling you that you still have 100 miles to go?
Whichever way it is happening both gauge and trip computer rely on the fuel gauge sender in the tank for their information. If the sender is not working you will get no reading. If it is working but stuck you will get a false reading. You need to get the sender unit out of the tank to see what is going on.
The attached shows you the sender unit and how to remove it from the tank. You do not need to take the tank off the car as you can access the top of the unit by removing the rear seat.

The information centre/trip computer is known to have problems on the 460. All I can suggest is disconnecting the unit and checking the connector for oxidation or loose contacts.

You'll probably find some dry joints on the PCB and possibly a couple of knackered capacitors. Anyone who's handy with a soldering iron can fix it in about 15 minutes. Get the cluster out and have a look at the PCB on the back - especially around the relay area next to the info centre.Volvoiom wrote:Thank you for that its really helped

In fact, that fixes about 90% of all info centre problems.
Have you calibrated the fuel computer to a full tank?Volvoiom wrote:Hi there I am need some advice on how to fix my problem I have a 1994 Volvo 460 GLT and my fuel gauge is dodge it shows I still have 100 miles to go but it's totally out of fuel I know this cos it want start what do I do to solve this because it keeps catching me out and I run out of fuel
From memory you hold down 'SET' while switching the ignition on and that allows you to use a small screwdriver in the hole on the info centre selector to change how much fuel the car thinks it has. Your car probably thinks it still has a few litres left when in fact it doesn't. I've had a google around to find the procedure, but the sites with it on it are down.
Hopefully someone will come along and shed some light on that one.
